Behind The Bars

Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry is dedicated to empowering citizens with the tools and information to help law enforcement solve crimes, capture fugitives and rid streets of crime.

Crime Stoppers Behind the Bars is an extension of Crime Stoppers. Tips come from incarcerated individuals housed in the Charleston County Detention Center. Inmates are able to use payphones with a direct number to Crime Stoppers (115) or through hand written letters sent anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers Behind the Bars is targeting the Charleston County Detention Center inmate population in hopes of receiving tips that will lead to the capture of fugitives, to the arrest of individuals involved in recent criminal cases, arrests of individuals involved in cold cases, and information leading to the recovery of missing persons.

How It Works

  • Phone Tips:
Setup by Charleston County Detention Center, inmate dial (115). No charge to make call and no monitoring of conversation. Crime Stoppers has a Twenty-Four hour answering service (bi-lingual). Crime Stoppers does not trace calls and does not have caller id.

  • Reward Pickup:
Inmates may advise Crime Stoppers to hold the check for an extended amount of time (up three months). Inmates may advise Crime Stoppers that they will call back when they are ready to pick up their reward (tip id will be required). Inmates may give out the tip id number to a family member or attorney to pick up reward (Crime Stoppers is never directly involved with issuing rewards - persons picking up rewards only need a tip id number to receive rewards).

  • Publicity:
Inmates will be shown a short video during initial intake explaining Crime Stoppers Behind the Bars. Inmates will be shown "cold case" and missing persons videos during the morning, afternoon and evening through the Charleston County Detention Center cable system. Current crime information and fugitive alerts will come through the local news. Posters have been developed and will be placed in conspicuous places throughout the Charleston County Detention Center.
